The big discussion you linked to started 2 years ago so my guess would be that this will have something to do with the reason for locking it. Anyway, the way i see it it's just one of the drawbacks of digital game stores. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's slow and on a rare occasion it doesn't work at all. Especially on peak times, like a weekend in the summer holiday, it would seem unrealistic to expect maximum speeds as you are likely not the only one trying to download something. Take that into account the next time you buy something to avoid future disappointment. If it's at origin's end you can count on them to fix it as fast as they can because a reliable service is in their best interest.
In English: what you're doing with that configuration file is telling Origin to download from point A as opposed to point B. We've heard complaints that point B has had download speed issues, but all of our metrics show that everything is roughly the same, with some differentials depending on where in the world you live. We haven't been able to prove that people (for example) in the US, France, or the UK are getting slower speeds from point B vs. Point A, but that's the reports we continually receive.
Quick launch desktop icon. I just posted about this in the technical forum, but wondered if any of you are finding your computer is slower to boot up since installing TS4? My PC (i5, Win 7 64 bit 8GB RAM) is usually pretty fast, but since I installed the free TS2 Ultimate Collection and TS4, it's taking around 7-8 minutes before I get to launch any programs. Before this it was only about a minute.I have plenty of hard drive space and everything is up to date, so I can only conclude that Origin is doing something weird on start up?
So you're trying to download a game through EA's Origin client. Your net speed is incredibly fast, your pings are fine and your ISP is very fair. Your computer is great and nobody is leeching your internet. Your porn torrents are closed and it's all set for Origin to download the game as fast as possible. You start the download, seems fine, 1.5mb/s!
You leave it and go eat some Nutella. You come back and BAM, 55kb/sec, estimated time remaining is 29 hours.
Feels great doesn't it? You know that contacting EA / posting on their forums will yield pointless answers like: 'Check your computer is connected to the internet' or 'It is your ISP' or 'Maybe somebody is using your wireless internet network' or something, so you just sit there crying quietly and curse EA repeatedly. Fear not my friend, I may have a solution for you, it worked for me so do not send me hate mail if it does not fix your issue. Option #1: DNS Fix: Origin decides what is the server which is more likely to give you the best speed, based on your location, but it seems for some reason that if you have your DNS configuration changed, as in, you are not using your ISP's DNS settings, Origin gives bad speeds.
I was downloading an update for FIFA 13 today at a whopping 26kb/sec, I restarted the router and tried everything, same speeds. I then set my DNS settings from my router back to the default ISP (auto) and the speeds jumped to 2mb/sec which is my downstream bandwidth limit.
Now to be clear, I changed my IP by restarting the router several times, so the IP change was not responsible for the jump in speeds, it only jumped when I changed the DNS after exhausting all my options. Now here's the bad news, if you have no idea what I just said, then your DNS settings are probably set to default, unless you are not the admin of your network. If you are the network admin and your DNS is not set to default, set it to auto from the router. As for what DNS means and why people may change it, check this link below (it is unrelated to what you need to do, it is just for information): Update 11/28: It seems that a good number of you have been contacting me for more detailed instructions, I do not think changing DNS settings alone warrants a new post, so I will post the instructions here. You need to access your router / modem. To access it you need its address.
A good way to obtain it is to go click start and type CMD and press enter. Then type IPCONFIG/ ALL (notice the space after the /) and press enter. If you are connecting from LAN (not wireless) you need the Default Gateway number from Ethernet Adapter, if you are on wireless then the Default Gateway from Wireless Adapter and so on. This number is the local address of the administration page of your router / modem. Paste this number in your internet browser. You may be prompted for a username / password, usually it is Admin/Admin or Admin/Pass or something similar. If you haven't changed it Google your router's default access codes. Since every router's admin page is different, I cannot tell you exactly where to go from here, but I can tell you what to look for.
Look for the term 'DNS' or 'DNS SERVER'. It is usually under advanced options if you cannot see it straight away. Set the DNS server to auto / set by ISP / default / blank etc. Look for such option. Clarification: I've seen people linking to this article saying to change TO Google DNS. Change to your ISP's DNS servers! The Google DNS link is just for information because it explains things clearly and in a very simple manner.
Option #2: R&D Mode in Origin: This option may work if the DNS fix hasn't fixed your speed issue, you may also try both. This doesn't work on downloads already started. You will need to restart whatever downloads you having running and also restart Origin. To start Origin in R&D Mode:.
Restart Origin. Right click on desktop and create new empty document. Paste the following two lines in the new document: connection EnvironmentName=production.
Feature CdnOverride=akamai. Save this new file as 'EACore.ini' Start Origin. When prompted about importing the file you just created on your Desktop, choose 'Yes'. Note that the file you created will be automatically deleted after Origin is running in R&D mode.
To revert to default settings go to Origin directory and delete 'EACore.ini'. I hope that I helped you fix your annoying problem today, have fun!
Please check my other posts: Ever wanted to play games on one monitor, and do whatever you want (including mouse clicks) on the other one? Yes mannnn thanks a lot. My connection is 10 MBPS, I can download 1 MB/s on seeded torrents but on origin download speed was 150-200 KB/s which means%15-20 of my real download speed. I've tried so many things and nothing worked. My dns was set to google dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 I've paused the download, exit the client (completely from the both right quick launch area) I've changed DNS to automatic and from command prompt I made ipconfig /flushdns (just to be sure) Restarted origin and resumed download.
It's now 1.2 MB/S Instead of 12 hours it's now 2 hours. Finally downloaded Dead Space 3 but not via Origin, I went into Origin's logs and copied and pasted the CDN address into my browser and directly downloaded the ZIP from their server. Took 7 hours (internet speed isn't that great) but it's a lot better than 300 hours via Origin! Copied and pasted the unzipped files into Origin's dead space 3 folder, Origin installed it for me and it works perfectly! If you decide to download via this option do not stop the download other wise when you go to the link again you'll get a '403 forbidden' link.
Ea Origin Store
Hope this helps.
